Despite Asaba’s full occupancy during our stay, the ryokan’s design and atmosphere allowed for a serene and almost solitary exploration of its facilities, from the corridors to the hot spring baths.
Upon checkout, we were warmly seen off by the proprietress, who presented us with a souvenir candy—a chocolate-covered bean embodying Asaba’s elegant sweetness, beautifully packaged in a box that bore the ryokan’s name, making it a precious memento of our stay. Additionally, the option to order a special onsen manju upon check-in enhanced the anticipation of our departure.
The surroundings of Asaba Ryokan, with its bamboo grove path and the historical sites such as the Genji family graves and Okuno-in, offered a tranquil and enriching walking experience, embedding our visit with a deep sense of place and history.
Asaba remains my favorite ryokan, distinguished by its unparalleled hospitality and atmospheric charm. It stands as a beacon of traditional Japanese hospitality, not as a global luxury hotel or corporate enterprise, but as a family-operated ryokan with a 400-year lineage of prestige and quality. Its exceptional cuisine and the genuine experience of Japan it offers make it a highly recommended destination for those in the Tokyo area seeking an onsen ryokan experience. Despite rising prices due to increased tourism, Asaba represents a valuable experience for those whose budget permits, promising a stay that is both memorable and profoundly enriching.
In considering the unique appeal of this ryokan, which undoubtedly ranks among the top three in Japan, it becomes clear that its distinctiveness lies in the atmosphere and the passage of time that can be uniquely experienced here. This ryokan excels in every aspect expected of a premier Onsen Ryokan —be it the spatial design, architectural beauty, surrounding natural landscapes, exceptional hospitality, or the culinary excellence. Each element is meticulously crafted, achieving a harmonious balance and synergy that defines the quintessential ryokan experience. This extraordinary atmosphere and the unique flow of time are the result of the careful calibration and integration of these various components. Such a destination is highly recommended not only for Japanese individuals seeking a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life and daily routines but also for international visitors in search of a truly special and immersive experience.
